Willem Jan van den Berghe, Southern German Mountain Landscape with Cows , ca 1850.


Willem Jan van der Berghe (1823-1901) is a painter and draftsman from Zeeland who, after his studies at the Academy of Antwerp, traveled for several years through southern Germany. Between 1847 and 1851 he painted mountain landscapes in the Ardennes, Bavaria, Tyrol and the Black Forest. This panel was painted during this period. He then traveled back to the Netherlands where he settled in The Hague and later in Middelburg. His works are included in Dutch museums, including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Zeeuwsmusuem.
